About Rats: Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet, behavior

Generally, we connect rats with rather negative feelings. The fear from rats originates from the past, when there were horrible conditions for living and therefore bubonic plague peaked and killed a lot of people. Rats were unfortunately the ones who spread this disease among Westport animal control people.

Rat is a rodent with a thin tail and it comes in a variety of sizes. There are around 60 Westport pest control species of rats spread all over the world. Typically, they grow up to 12 cm or even longer. It has brown, gray or black fur all over their body with the Westport wildlife removal exception of bare tail, feet and ears. As rat is nocturnal animal, it has adjusted sight to be able to see at night. The strongest sense is their hearing. Rats usually have 16 teeth and they are known by the two incisors that grow throughout rat´s entire life. The teeth must be continually gnawing to a certain length; otherwise they can become a big problem. The teeth start to curl to the back of the mouth and make eating and biting very difficult. Rat´s teeth and jaw muscles are extremely powerful and can be quite deadly. Rats use their tails for balancing, it helps them to communicate and it regulates their body temperature as well.

Rats can be found all over the globe and are well adjusted to all weather conditions. They like to live near human settlements, where they build nests. Nests can be built in the trees or buildings. Rats are omnivores, and would eat any kind of food they found. However, many rats prefer meat if they have a choice. They live near Westport animal trapping humans because that´s the easiest way to get to the food. They scavenge through the trash cans or help themselves with any food left unprotected. They also eat grains, hunt for harmful insects, snails, fish, birds, small mammals and even reptiles.

Rats build nests from various materials gathered in the nearby area, like branches, grass, paper and sometimes trash. Nests can be built in the trees or buildings. They mate very intensively and can give birth up to 22 young in one litter or 2.000 young per one year. Rat carries offspring in a period of 21-26 days. It can start reproduction cycle by the age of three months. Most Westport exterminator house rats die within their first year of life (91-97%).

As researches show rats are in fact extremely social and enjoy the company of other rats and even humans as well. They can become very lonely and depressed, if they are alone. When one of the rats gets sick, others will take care of it. You can hear and see when the rat is happy. It chatters and grinds with its teeth and makes ´happy´ sounds.
